Student Organizations
Student organizations are an integral part of the educational program at Western Area CTC. These co-curricular experiences provide students with the opportunities to develop leadership skills and to participate in community service activities. Students are also able to compete locally, regionally, statewide, and nationally in skills and leadership competitions in their occupational specialty. Students may participate in the following organizations: American Welding Society (AWS); BattleBots (or similar organization); National Technical Honor Society (NTHS); and SkillsUSA.
National Technical Honor Society
NTHS Mission Statement
The mission of the National Technical Honor Society is to advocate for and empower all students to pursue the skills needed to build their careers and the global workforce.
NTHS Vision Statement
The Vision of the National Technical Honor Society is to be the international leader in providing recognition for excellence in career and technical education.
The NTHS Core 4 Objectives
The NTHS Core 4 Objectives serve as guiding principles that direct the activities and growth of local chapters. Derived from the original seven attributes of NTHS—Skill, Scholarship, Leadership, Honesty, Responsibility, Service, and Citizenship—these objectives are designed to empower members and foster their development in areas essential for success in their future careers. They include Career Development, Leadership, Service, and Recognition opportunities. These objectives provide a foundation for building a vibrant and impactful NTHS community, fostering growth, leadership, service, and recognition among its members.
Acceptance to Western Area’s NTHS
Students are nominated by their instructors based on grades, attitude, discipline, and attendance. Student requirements for acceptance: no discipline issues, can not be absent more than 9 days of school, have a 4.0 gpa at Western Area, and a QPA of 3.5 or higher at the sending school.
SkillsUSA
SkillsUSA is a national student organization that develops employability, participatory and leadership skills to complement the occupational skills developed by students in technical education classrooms or work-based learning sites. SkillsUSA is an integral part of approved technical education occupation programs.
SkillsUSA Purpose…
- To unite in a common bond all students enrolled in trade, industrial, technical and health occupations education
- To develop leadership abilities through participation in educational, vocational, civic, recreational and social activities
- To foster a deep respect for the dignity of work
- To assist students in establishing realistic vocational goals
- To help students attain a purposeful life
- To create enthusiasm for learning
- To promote high standards in trade ethics, workmanship, scholarship and safety
- To develop the ability of students to plan together, organize and carry out worthy activities and projects through the use of the democratic process
- To foster a wholesome understanding of the functions of labor and management organizations and a recognition of their mutual interdependence
- To create among students, faculty members, patrons of the school and persons in business and labor a sincere interest in the esteem for trade, industrial, technical and health occupations
- To develop patriotism through knowledge of our nation’s heritage and the practice of democracy
